Track Tool

The Track Tool draws a tracklog on the map.

To select the Track Tool, do the following:

  1. View a map
  2. Then, do one of the following:
    • On the Tools menu, click Track Tool.
    • Press K.
    • Click the Track ToolTrack Tool button on the Map toolbar.
  3. The cursor will change to Track Tool cursor

Drawing a new track

To draw a new track, do the following:

  1. Position the Track Tool over a blank portion of the map. The cursor will change to Track Tool - Draw New Track cursor
  2. Click or drag the mouse to begin drawing. The cursor will change to Track Tool - Drawing Track cursor

A new track will be created. When you finish drawing the track, the Edit Track Dialog will appear so you can label the track.

Extending an existing track from one of its ends

To extend an existing track, do the following:

  1. Position the Track Tool over either end of an existing track. The cursor will change to Track Tool - Extend Track cursor
  2. Click or drag the mouse to begin drawing. The cursor will change to Track Tool - Drawing Track cursor

If you began drawing at the beginning of the existing track, it will be reversed.

As you draw, points will be added to the end of the track.

Adding a spur (backtracking)

To add a spur trail off of an existing track, do the following:

  1. Position the Track Tool over a point on the existing track. The cursor will change to Track Tool - Draw Track Branch cursor
  2. Click or drag the mouse to begin drawing. The cursor will change to Track Tool - Drawing Track cursor

ExpertGPS will automatically backtrack the existing track to the point where you began drawing.

As you draw, points will be added to the end of the new spur track.

Adding a single trackpoint (drawing straight lines)

To add a single trackpoint to the track, click and release the left mouse button.

A single trackpoint will be added to the track. Use this method to draw straight lines.

Adding multiple trackpoints (drawing curved tracks)

To draw a curved track, do the following:

  1. Hold down the left mouse button to begin drawing.
  2. Drag the mouse to create trackpoints along the path.
  3. Release the mouse button to stop drawing.

Erasing a portion of the track

To erase the portion of the track that you just drew, do the following:

  1. Hold down the Alt key. The cursor will change to the Track Eraser. Track Tool - Erase Track cursor
  2. Position the Track Eraser over the end of the track. The cursor will change to Track Tool - Erase Track cursor
  3. Drag the mouse back over the recently-drawn track to select trackpoints to erase. The selected trackpoints will be highlighted in purple.
  4. To erase the selected portion of the track, do the following:
    1. Make sure that the Track Eraser is currently over the track, and that the cursor is Track Tool - Erase Track cursor
    2. Release the mouse button.
  5. To cancel the selection without erasing, do the following:
    1. Position the Track Eraser so that it is no longer over the track. The cursor will change to Track Tool - Erase Track cursor
    2. Release the mouse button.

To finish drawing the track, do one of the following:

  • Double-click.
  • Press Enter.

The Edit Track dialog will appear.

To finish drawing the track, do one of the following:

  • Hold down the Shift key and double-click.
  • Press Esc.
  • Click the right mouse button.
